Mrs. Carballo’s 7th Grade Utah Studies class at Parowan High School recently learned about the different people who are native to this land; both preset day tribes, and archaic cultures. We were graced with the beauty of a guest who really spoke to us. Linda Bitsoie taught us about her Navajo Culture. We learned about the clans in a tribe, about family lineage, about the importance knowing who you are and where you come from to understand where you’re going. Our class was taught about peace and respect, connections we can have with everything around us, about paths, having good intentions, and being kind. We worked with leather and sinue to sew medicine bags that will house sacred items, little things that are symbolic to the students. Our bags already have cedar that has been blessed, as well as a handful of cards that we made that depict what we want to hold close to our hearts. Utah has been home to native peoples since a time period around 12,000 B.C. We are fortunate to have written history, oral histories, historians, teachers, archaeologists, artifacts, descendants, and traditions that help us learn more about our world- both past and present!
